Planning the trip from the Midway area

Planning the trip from the Midway area

Plan your route around the separate transit connections at Midway and Oak Park, rather than assuming there is a direct service between them. CTA’s Oak Park Green Line station connects with Pace bus 311, while the Midway CTA station connects with Pace buses 379, 382, 383, 384, 385, 386 and 390.

The Village of Oak Park identifies CTA bus routes 72, 86, 90 and 91, along with Pace routes 305, 307, 309, 311, 313, 314, 315 and 318, as operating in Oak Park. For trip planning from the Midway area, use this guide to getting around Chicago from Midway alongside current transit information.

Since the connections alone do not establish a complete itinerary or service hours, allow time to plan transfers and check the relevant operators before leaving. The Oak Park attractions make a fuller day possible, but the exact order depends on your route and tour reservations.

Architecture and historic sites in Oak Park

Oak Park’s main architectural stops are Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home and Studio and Unity Temple, both associated with Wright’s Prairie-period work. The Home and Studio is at 951 Chicago Avenue; Unity Temple is at 875 Lake Street.

Wright’s first home and studio dates to 1889–1909. The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust describes the site as the birthplace of an architectural revolution, and says Wright and his associates developed Prairie-style architecture in the studio. Unity Temple, dated to 1905–08, is the Trust’s description of Wright’s only surviving public building from his Prairie period.

The Guided Interior Tour lasts 60 minutes and costs $24 general admission; it is free for Trust members. The Inside and Out tour lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, combining the 60-minute interior visit with a 45-minute outdoor Historic Neighborhood audio tour, and costs $38 general admission.

Entry is by guided tour only. If you have an online or phone reservation, check in at the Museum Shop and arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour.

The Trust highly recommends advance tickets because tour capacity is limited, though day-of tickets may be purchased online, by phone or in person. Its outdoor Oak Park Historic Neighborhood audio tour is available in English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.

Unity Temple

Unity Temple tours last 45–90 minutes, with admission from $18 to $40. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 4:15 pm, giving you another Wright site to pair with the Home and Studio.
