Indiana Dunes National Park can make a day trip from the Midway area if you choose a main stop before setting out. The park stretches along Lake Michigan, with beach areas and visitor facilities spread across the region, so a little planning helps you focus the day.

For a beach-focused visit, pick a shoreline area first and check its hours and facilities before you go. If you’d rather mix beach time with a walk, choose a nearby trail or visitor stop, then leave time to travel between park areas. Beach parking lots have potable water and restrooms.

Chicago’s lakefront beaches are another option if you want to stay in the city. The choice between the park and the city shoreline depends on whether you’re planning a day outside Chicago or a beach stop within it; compare the Chicago beach options that fit your trip as you decide.

Choosing a beach, trail or visitor stop

Choosing a beach, trail or visitor stop

Indiana Dunes National Park has 15 miles of sandy beach, with several named beach areas. The National Park Service identifies West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Beach, Porter Beach, Kemil Beach, Dunbar Beach, Lake View Beach and Central Avenue Beach.

West Beach has lifeguards, locker rooms and showers during the period from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the Monday of Labor Day weekend. Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM during that period. If those services matter to your plan, confirm the current details with the NPS before you go.

For a stop away from the shoreline, the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is at 1215 SR-49, Porter, Indiana 46304. You can use it as a starting point for planning your park visit, then head to a beach or other area that suits your day.

Before swimming, read the posted beach information and check current park conditions. The NPS advises visitors to do this for swimming safety, including awareness of rip currents.
